A SHORT LIFE-CHRONICLE

Berlin, 2018. Portrait by Ernesto Mendez

Carlos Sandoval was born in Mexico City. Coming from a family immersed in 40-60s Mexican fine-art milieu, he started being an eager live-drawing kid who was in contrast suffering extreme violent elementary-schools. He entered the National School of Music 20 years later, but the conservatism and mediocrity of this institution not only led him to leave it, but also made him distance himself definitively from the formal academy.

A contemporary polymath, he studied music-composition, analysis and theory, music-instrument building and restoration techniques, analogue photography, digital video production, mural painting, and drawing. His creative conceptions are many times mixed with his handwork  in such a way it became a watermark in his career: He became the assistant to Conlon Nancarrow, built a MIDI piano with Trimpin, developed (STEIM Foundation) his gloves with pressure-sensitive sensors, which evolved into his installations with trees and sensors). He also made his "Blind Box", an instrument-sculpture where tactile sensation become a sonic experience.

After the COVID-lockdown, he abandoned all sonification techniques and composition, and continues his explorations on several fields, mainly video scoring, AI-assisted art, instrument design, and drawing. The mix of Gestalt and hidden technologies are still coloring his career.
